Leeds, UK

Job description

Application Support Engineers at William Hill are hybrid software/systems engineers who ensure that William Hill’s services run smoothly and have the capacity for future growth. They are embedded in every one of William Hill's product and infrastructure teams, and are core participants in every significant engineering effort underway in the company.

Your role in the team

Ideally, you have a natural curiosity, strong analytical skills, ability, attitude and a desire to develop your broad range of skills to join our production engineering team. We sail into uncharted waters every day at William Hill in Production Engineering, and we are always learning. This position is full-time and located in our Leeds office.

This is a varied role in which you'll own back-end services, front-end services, infrastructure components and everything in between. You'll need to have the ability to write and review code, involved in capacity plans, and debug the hardest problems, live, on some of the complex systems within William Hill.

Together with your engineering team, you will share an on-call rotation, and a 5 from 7 regular working pattern including weekend cover.

Skills needed

This role will suit you if you have a background in application support, incident management or server operations. You'll need to be proficient in Unix, and have a general understanding of how complex IT systems are put together, and how they relate to other systems. You'll also need the  ability to review / write code really well in at least one programming language.

We use a wide range of tools and technologies, eg. New Relic, Splunk, Pager Duty and can train you on these.

You'll need to enjoy problem solving, and taking a curious, methodical approach to fixing issues and responding to incidents. You're also a keen learner, able to  pick up an understanding of new software, frameworks and APIs quickly.

Sharp and tenacious troubleshooting skills are essential. You must be self-motivated, enjoy technical challenges and delivering results, flexible and adaptable and can cope when thrown in at the deep end (with support of course!)

We'd like to see you demonstrate understanding of collaborative task management, good verbal and written communications skills, and careful attention to detail.

What we offer

We take the safety and wellbeing of our employees seriously, especially at this challenging time. We have put in place robust Covid19 measures and are supporting our new employees with a smooth remote onboarding and training programme to make you feel welcome and part of our team.

We will soon be able to welcome our teams back to the office, however, we want to offer a balanced approach to office and home working - now and for the long-term future. We know that not everyone is the same, many people have embraced home working, whilst others can’t wait to get back. Therefore, we are offering our employees the opportunity to work from home up to 80% of the time with 20% of office time built in to ensure we get some face to face collaborative team time -  and the chance for a coffee and a catch up.
