Your role in the team

 As the Head of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) for our Platform Team,  you will grow, develop and lead our SRE capability. You'll bring a perfect blend of technical expertise and leadership skills, to ensure system reliability, performance and continuous improvement and automation.

 

In this role, you will also act as Chapter Lead for SRE at William Hill. Focusing on building an industry leading community across our SRE organisation, you will drive alignment and ensure consistency in  approach and best practices across the channels. You will own the development, testing, and refinement of learning journeys for developing team members and keep up to date with latest developments, embedding new ways of working into the organisation.

 

Your role will remain technical, devising future SRE strategy and leading the evangelisation of reliability engineering methods, process and tooling across the division, looking at best practice and continual improvement.

A key part of the role will be people management and leadership; , coaching and mentoring to continuously develop your teams and collaborating across the wider business.

Your key responsibilities will include: 

  • Accountability for maintaining a common SRE “way of working” across multiple teams, technologies, and domains
  • Helping teams maintain a 50/50 balance between operations and engineering improvements
  • Working with the Engineering, Product, and Operations teams to ensure that appropriate attention is given to 'Reliability Engineering:

o    Focus on automation; in the context of self-healing & auto-remediation

o    Ensuring systems are able to withstand 'chaos engineering' practices

o    Establishing best practices, education, and delivery of modern observability capabilities across logs, metrics, and tracing leveraging technologies like New Relic, Open Telemetry, and Splunk

o    Ensuring the means exist to quickly recover a degraded service (instrumentation, runbooks, tooling etc)

o    Ensuring platform features fail gracefully when services are degraded

o    Driving SRE education across the wider team to improve quality and reliability

  • Partnering with business and operations technology teams to ensure effective communication with regard to service reliability, performance and superior customer experience
  • Agreeing SLO's, SLA's and SLI's and managing relationships with 3rd parties (where required), to ensure quality standards are met and maintained
  • Implement metrics to enable data driven decisions, always governing the quality of the team
  • Driving influence. Reliability is everyone’s job, but more so for the Head of SRE. A critical behaviour for the role is influencing the roadmap and processes of other teams
  • Attracting and recruiting the best talent across all your teams whilst defining and maintaining the optimal team structures and ways of working

 

Skills needed

 

This is a strategic role, which would suit a strong and people focused leader who has a track record of creating and maintaining collaborative working relationships, across diverse business areas and with senior, executive level stakeholders. You'll have exemplary and credible verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills and be highly influential, with the ability to engage and inspire others.

Ideally, you will have experience of working within a digital native organisation, comfortable operating in complex matrix style operations.

 In addition, you will have:

 

  • A track record of building and leading successful technical teams
  • A strong emphasis on SRE as an engineering discipline with a focus on automation
  • Expertise in problem solving and analysing complex distributed systems
  • Broad knowledge of Technology, gained in a real-time customer-facing environment or high-volume transactional business
  • Technical knowledge and expertise in Terraform, AWS, Kubernetes, New Relic and Splunk would be ideal
  • Knowledge of service management toolsets and reporting
  • An interest in our business and product goals
