Site Reliability Engineers work across Tech Teams to make William Hill UK systems and services reliable, performant and scalable.

The SRE has a highly skilled combination of engineering, analytical and operations skills and is focused on automating and improving operations. Their job is to guarantee system reliability, performance, and supportability with a strong engineering emphasis on building autonomous solutions that deliver value to end-users early, often, & fast. They are central to the reputation and trustworthiness of the product and act as an advocate for engineering best practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement new features in WH products to improve customer experience by enabling graceful degradation
  • Identifying opportunities to improve performance and reliability of our frontend services.
  • Driving improvements in KPI's (performance, availability)
  • Monitoring improvements – Identifies gaps in monitoring based on both knowledge and lessons learnt during post mortems
  • Communicate - Promotes and communicates across product team on reliability topics. Is an advocate for Engineering best practices, drafts design documents and presents solutions to stakeholders
  • Process management - Automates provisioning, quality controls, security auditing and maintenance
  • Platform improvements - Analyzes and improves efficiency, reliability, and scalability of the platform including deployment tooling and infrastructure. Create software delivery pipelines to increase development team velocity and confidence

Technical skills (at least a few of these):

  • Fluency in one or more programming languages (preferably JavaScript) and ability to debug code locally and remotely with strong understanding of all levels of a distributed system
  • Experience with monitoring and logging stacks/tools e.g. NewRelic, Splunk, etc.
  • (very nice to have) understanding of cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS), CI/CD pipelines solutions (e.g. GitLab CI), deployment automation solution (e.g., Terraform) and containers (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Knowledge in following areas: networking, security, protocols
Agile/digital experience:
  • Experience working in Agile teams and Agile SDLC practices
  • Experience with constant upkeep of documentation and runbooks

Individual skills:
  • Communication - Displays strong communication skills with ability to align diverse stakeholder groups on complex technical decisions
  • Entrepreneurial - Is excited about trying new technologies and architectural solutions, but doesn’t shy away of maintaining and upgrading legacy systems
  • Excellent English skills (written and spoken)
